| | | | | | STUNNING PRINTER, ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED - Scores 5/5
We have used this printer in our family of four for over a year now and are really delighted with it. I use it for work (reports including diagrams), my wife uses it for her university art degree and our children use it for school work. We all use it to print photographs. It has worked flawlessly for over a year. We have it connected to two desktop and two laptop machines via an ethernet network. A particularly nice feature is that when the printer reports "the (yellow/ black/ whatever) cartridge has run out" you can press the "OK" button and it continues to print without changing the cartridge. So you can keep going until the ink really has run out. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 09 NOVEMBER 2008 |
| | | | | | CANON PRODUCT CONTACT - Scores 3/5
I note in the reviews the difficulty some buyers have when contacting Canon. I agree the website for Canon for product support can be mystifying to say the least. I have several Canon products myself, ranging from the brilliant Pixma iP4200, to camcorders and scanners, so am well tested in the Canon 'contact' arena - I have always found the Canon Helpdesk (Freephone 00800 22666767) at PO Box 614 Borehamwood WD6 9AA to be very helpful.
I hope this helps Amazon viewers/readers. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 06 OCTOBER 2008 |
| | | | | | A MONSTER BUT A GREAT DEVICE - Scores 5/5
I bought this to put on a wireless network with a Mac and PC, so this is as complex as it can get.
Size: The reviews say the MP600R is huge, but until you get it it's hard to visualise. I recommend you mock up the printer with cardboard to make sure you have somewhere to put it.
Setup: I recommend you put aside an hour (for a printer? Yes, really!) so you don't get distracted and miss steps. Unpacking the printer was ok, as was setting up the print head and ink. Loading the software on the PC was slightly problematic. Use the custom setting to aviod loading some of the stuff (eg Arcsoft). My problem was the web page print software didn't load, once I had unticked this it was fine, although it takes about 25 minutes, and you need to be there to click through some options and OK boxes.
Wireless: I first set up the PC by linking it to the printer by USB, then methodically followed the instructions. It worked first time once I took out the USB lead (I disabled the firewall as recommended), taking about 20 minutes in all. I then loaded the software on the Mac and connected wirelessly. The Mac was far simpler (less to do) and again worked first time in a room about 15 metres away. Very impressed, but given the complexity of the instructions (which you have to expect given what you are doing) I can see how things could go wrong (the book is very wasteful, about 500 pages just for the setup, with only 60 in English). Over a day or so I had issues with connectivity, but this seemed to be when Norton flashed a warning about other programs and there was then a knock on effect on the MP600R which cleared after a few minutes.
Print quality is fantastic, with standard photo paper it is as good as I get from Jessops, with well matched colour and superb resolution. Speed is slower than I thought it would be, even with B&W A4 prints.
Overall, very pleased with the printer, especially when you get the bonus of a scanner and double sided copier (which I haven't tried yet). Expect an hour of head scratching and you'll be pleased with the result.

| | | | | | MULTI-FUNCTIONLESS DESK ORNAMENT - Scores 1/5
Received my MP600R just over 2 weeks ago from Amazon & for 2 weeks it has worked great. Wirelessly connected to my PC with no problems & I've printed a few CD labels, a photo and scanned a couple of pictures. Three days ago I turned on the printer and got a message saying that the Print Head was not the correct one to install and I should install the correct print head. You can't do anything else while this mesage is on screen. The print head is the original Canon one that arrived with the printer. The printer is now useless and I can't even print a return label from amazon!
Canon's website advises that you remove and re-sit the print head but after 20 or 30 fruitless re-sittings, I've stopped wasting my time. Canon's other advise is to buy a new print head. They're expensive & a printer should last more than 2 weeks.
If you are thinking of buying this printer then stay clear and go for something else. I gambled & lost. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 29 AUGUST 2008 |
| | | | | | NETWORK CONNECTION TAKES FOREVER TO FIGURE OUT, BUT WORKS WELL THEREAFTER - Scores 1/5
Connecting the printer directly to a single machine is easy; albeit a long process that leaves your machine overburdened with applications and icons (as do printers from most manufacturers these days!).
However, if you try to connect it directly AND to a wireless network (direct wired USB connection for a desktop plus wireless for your laptop via a wireless hub) then you can expect hours of frustration. So, BEWARE, if you are connecting this to anything other than the most trivial of networks, as it is a non-trivial process. For us the technique seemed to be to ignore that you are connecting to the network and install it as a USB connected device (for which you'll need to bring your machine to the device and connect it with a USB lead). Then after installation re-run the installation (but uncheck all the apps) but this time go for network - leave the usb lead connected during this process.
In operation the printer is quiet (and there is even a quieter night mode!?!), duplex operation works very effectively, print quality is great (better than our former HP despite its plethora of ink cartridges - excellent colour matching, you can print photos with no worry of strange colour casts appearing), and astonishingly (given their claimed figures, but again this seems to be true of all modern ink jet printers) SLOW. Turn the printer on, wait whilst it makes a load of noises inside, print a document, wait while it makes a load of noises inside, wait for each page to dry, wait while it makes a load of noise half way through the document - I'm sure inkjets are getting slower these days, not faster!
