 | | | | | | | | BRILLIANT IN ALMOST EVERY WAY - Scores 5/5
I've been looking for this sort of self-contained MP3 streamer for a while, and I was given this for Christmas. It doesn't disappoint! In fact, it has exceeded my expectations in almost every way.
The fundamentals work exactly as you want them to -- the controls do what they should, when they should, which makes it easy to use. The MP3 streaming from my network works very well -- it's fast to find music by album, artist, title, genre, etc. There is a bewildering range of radio stations listed from all over the world and they're easy to "tune" into as well.
As well as the basics, it has a lot of extra features. Freecom has obviously thought about how this is going to be used. So, for example, it has an alarm clock, a "sleep" function, and the backlight can be dimmed automatically. This might seem like a minor point, but some alarm clocks / clock-radios, etc. have annoyingly bright screens. They've also added an RSS reader, weather and stock quotes to the list of functions too. I was a bit dubious about this at first, but actually, it's quite useful -- check out the weather feed from your bed and decide whether to get up perhaps!
Re networks and whatnot, it's easy enough to connect. At first, it wouldn't connect to my wireless connection, but I thought I'd do as others have suggested, and updated the firmware. This was very easy to do and just meant plugging the thing into my router first. After that, it connected to the wireless network in seconds.
As for the downside, there are two problems, in my view.
Firstly, whilst the unit looks quite smart, it feels awfully cheap and light. This mightn't be a bad thing I suppose, as it does make it very portable.
Secondly, the sound quality isn't that special. There's just one speaker, and it's not great. Don't get me wrong, it's not awful, but don't expect the sound quality of a Bose! I'd be interested to plug the unit into some powered speakers (line outs are provided on the back) and I'll bet it sounds fab. I think that Freecom could have done a better job on the audio, but on the other hand, it's principal advantages are that it's small and light.
All in all, I couldn't be much happier with the Musicpal -- it has given me MP3 streaming in a stylish wireless bundle, and like other reviewers, I'll be getting more for around the house. Incidentally, the price shown here is £150 or so. It's widely available for less than half that price. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 30 DECEMBER 2008 |

It arrived, I plugged it in, it did not boot remaining on the opening screen. Tried various things and then contacted Freecom support who said if it won't boot it is defective and should be returned. You would think a item would be tested before it leaves the factory. Don't buy. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 30 DECEMBER 2008 |
| | | | | | NOT JUST A RADIO! - Scores 5/5
WOW! Is what sums up this piece of kit! This is the first Internat Radio i have used but if they are all half as good as this id be pleasently suprised! First things first, when you get it, like all technology connected to the net you will have to UPDATE it, VERY IMPORTANT!! Alot of people are moaning becasue of no BBC etc...this is becasue they are ignorant to modern day technology. Please use things correctly befor complaining!
Right so once it has been updated (mine is now 1.51) you should get all your beloved stations which is cool! However, and this is great! You can control the Music Pal from your PC, *setting up all your favourites etc etc. You can also set up numorous RSS feeds(scrilling tickertape information bar) like BBC news, CNN etc. * The weather * Mobile phone websites * More RSS feeds * clock and alarm etc.
That stuff is all very impressive, however here is the bit the i found great! Using the L&R phono ports on the back you can plug t into your stereo and stream all your MP3s from you PC to the stereo!! Fantastic!! The search facility is great too as you can search folders rather than just what info you MP3 happen to have on them, makes thing so much easier!
SO in a nutshell for 60 quid this thing is amazing!

| | | | | | BARGAIN! - Scores 5/5
I was a little dubious about buying this product due to the ferocity of the few negative reviews on amazon.co.uk, but having weighed them up along with all the positive reviews and the price and vital statistics of the product I decided to go for it. What a good move! My first thoughts after unpacking the radio were that it is a good looking compact piece of equipment, the control system is useful and user friendly and it was dead easy to get it up and running. Suddenly, my spirits fell when the BBC stations did not appear in the vast list of available stations! Dammit, were the naysayers right after all? No they weren't. By following the instructions on the disc provided I had all the BBC radio stations saved as favourites on the machine, plus a few of my favourite net stations within five minutes of opening the box. More importantly, my technophobe wife for whom this was a gift can operate it with ease. The sound quality is fine for what it is, and I can plug my speakers into the radio if I need more volume and enhanced quality. What a result - I am 100% pleased with this purchase. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 25 DECEMBER 2008 |
| | | | | | JUST WHAT I WANTED FOR THE KITCHEN FOR UNDER £60 - Scores 4/5
After a lot of searching for a good value WIFI radio for the kitchen, I went for the Freecom MusicPal. It was the cheapest on Amazon by quite a margin and had free delivery. What's more it was delivered earlier than anticipated just before Christmas.
The radio is a cinch to setup, I didn't need the manual to get going and was listening to the station of choice after about 6 minutes. It easily discovered the WIFI network and I entered the (long) password which was a bit of a fiddle using the knob, but hopefully is a one off job.
The display is clear and concise, the menus are easy to understand and succinct. It will automatically pick up a shared iTunes library and play songs that don't have DRM protection.
It comes with Mac & PC software but all this really seems to do is discover the IP address and send you to the radio's built in webpage, so thereafter, just use the IP address of your radio in your browser and add it to your bookmarks/favourites for instant access. In the webpage you can change ALL settings and add RSS feeds, new stations etc...
The audio quality is fine for a small kitchen radio, a bit better than it's small size implied. All in all a great second radio or a clock radio for the bedside because the brightness settings are very customisable.
Would have given ***** if it was a fair bit cheaper. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 20 DECEMBER 2008 |
