| LIGHTS UP YOUR BEDROOM ON STANDBY - Scores 1/5
Good sound - not as good looking as the Bose but so what - major problem - the Bose was my Alarm clock... This thing on Standby must use an awful lot of power as it lights the room!! | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 10 NOVEMBER 2008 |

| BRIGHT BLUE LIGHT MAKES THIS UNUSABLE IN A BEDROOM - Scores 1/5
Do not buy this if you want to use the alarm feature in a bedroom. The blue backlight on the main display only dims slightly when on standby, and the bright blue light behind the volume control does not turn off. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 14 OCTOBER 2008 |

| EXCELLENT SOUND. LCD LETS IT DOWN - Scores 4/5
If you do not want to spend twice as much on Bose, get this unit. Excellent sound and build quality. We only use it for DAB so I cannot comment on other sound sources. What is miss is direct iPod connection, not just input jack.
And what we do not like? The LCD is too bright during the night, so bright it seems feels like full moon. However, this can be advantage if you need to find way out of the bedroom and back during night. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 24 AUGUST 2008 |

| GOOD LOOKING & GOOD SOUNDING - Scores 4/5
Very well made, nicely finished & quite compact, this CD DAB table-top combination looks & sounds the business. DAB reception is excellent with the attached unexpanded aerial as is FM. The unit quickly finds all the major stations & locks into the signals very well.
The sound from the radio (DAB & FM) is very good; warm & full sounding with voices being easy to follow.
Sound from the CD is OK but suffers a little in the way of timing & the fact the MP23 has a tendency to `over-cook' the base which can't be turned down. The only really effective equalizer pre-set (Rock) simply makes the music - including the base - go louder.
Volume is very good though, with the ability to go quite loud without distorting the music & the stereo effect is good with speakers at either end of the unit.
The remote is small & compact but don't loose it as most of the MP23's functionality is controlled via it!
Three small gripes: the headphone socket is at the back of the unit when it should be at the front or side for easy access (Roberts should know that by now!)
The blue light on the display is quite bright & can't be turned off or even dimmed. This would be a problem if used in a bedroom.
Other minor gripe? The colour or rather lack of choice. Most people will use this in their bedroom or kitchen & the piano black finish won't suit everyone. My wife, for example, wanted a wood finish to match our kitchen cabinets.
All in all a very good system; it can't replace my mid price ROKSAN Candy amp & CD player but it costs about 1/10 of them if you include decent speakers.
For everyday listening the Roberts MP23 is an excellent compromise between size, cost & sound quality.
Recommended. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 07 AUGUST 2008 |

| NOT FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC - Scores 3/5
I bought an MP 23 to replace a twenty year old set of units with lots of wires. It looks great, is small and the DAB is easy to use and finds all the stations. But the first one I had made a buzzing noise, with occasional clicks, when using the CD player and was replaced as defective.
However it, and the replacement, have too much bass. I like classical music and, for example, the lower notes in piano music sound as if there was a double bass accompanying. This happens in other types of music and is only absent in songs and loud orchestral pieces (where it is presumably inaudible).
The inability to adjust the bass is a major drawback. There is an "equalizer" with a choice of six modes, which makes a marginal difference, but is insufficient. There is a Dynamic Range Control to make quieter sounds easier to hear but it only works with DAB.
This is a great DAB radio and CD player, with masses of gizmos. If you like plenty of sound you will like it, but if you want to hear the instruments in classical CDs without the sound of a double bass (or furniture being moved) don't buy it. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 14 JULY 2008 |
