 | | | | | | | | THE ROBI DEFINATELY WORTH IT - Scores 5/5
bouhgt one from argos today very good....my robi is paired with my ipod video it was no trouble setting up and worked as the manual said it would. the features ,,,DAB..FM..REMOTE ,,worked as xpected and it's shortcomings are like any other device of the same type..reception will depend on the signal strength in your area...dab will crackle a bit if you are on the move and fm reception is par with most fm receivers ..the remote works quiet well but don't xpect to b able to xplore all the sub menus on your ipod...yes it seemed a bit xpensive but dab devices generally are!!apparently it's not compatible with the latest ipods so if you have a classic or the latest nanos check first!! | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 22 SEPTEMBER 2008 |
| | | | | | THE ISSUES OVER THE 'ROBI' SWITCHING OFF SEEM TO BE RESOLVED - Scores 4/5
I have had a robi since March of this year. An itunes/ipod software update from Feb 2008 caused this unit to switch itself off after a couple of minutes of use, rendering it useless (see reviews below)
I recently(Aug 2008)tried the robi again to see if recent itunes/ipod software updates had resolved this issue.
GOOD NEWS! The updates seem to have stopped the robi switching off.
If you have one or are thinking of buying one - it is a really handy device that is now fully functional providing you have an ipod with fully updated software. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 27 AUGUST 2008 |
| | | | | | THE BEST RADIO FOR THE IPOD - Scores 4/5
After the huge disappointment of trying, and failing, to get any decent reception using the Apple radio/remote, I was pleased when I found out Roberts had brought out a DAB alternative. The device plugs into the ipod and the supplied headphones then plug into the remote. When you plug in the remote the ipod immediately detects it and displays the Robi logo on its LCD. You can then set the remote to scan all the DAB radio stations it can find and store them in your favourites list, allowing you to flick between your favourite channels at a flick of a button on the remote. The remote itself also has an LCD screen that displays what radio station you are listening to.
The remote also has a Mode button that allows you to change between the DAB radio, FM radio (I don't bother using this as DAB reception is so much better), and Remote. The Remote mode allows you to control your ipod's music in the normal way, supporting play/pause, skip, and fast forward/rewind. You can also switch the ipod off and on by pressing the play button down for 2 seconds.
But the most important aspect of this device is the radio reception, which I can report is excellent and vastly superior to the Apple radio/remote. It detects many DAB stations and reception is generally very clear and reliable, though occasionally the channel will 'drop out' whereby reception is momentarily lost, but this doesn't happen often. The remote uses the headphone wire as its aerial and Roberts recommend using the supplied headphones for best reception, but I tried using my own ipod headphones and found reception to be just as good. So if you prefer to use your own headphones and not the Robi ones then this should not be a problem.
The device is not perfect and has a few quirks. For instance, although you can use the remote to switch the ipod on, occasionally this refuses to work and you have to switch the ipod on from the ipod itself. Also, sometimes the remote will lock up completely, causing the radio to stop working and the only way to get it working again is to unplug it from the ipod and reconnect it. The remote also occasionally switches on the ipod at random moments, which is annoying when you've switched the ipod off then find later the remote has turned it back on again, wasting a lot of the battery. But I must stress that these issues happen quite rarely and generally the Robi remote works flawlessly most of the time. I can also report that the issue where the remote keeps switching on the ipod backlight has also now been resolved.
This is without the doubt the best radio for the ipod and is an excellent complementary device for any ipod. The radio reception is excellent, as a remote it does everything the Apple remote does, but with the addition of a handy LCD, and it looks very stylish as well, I definitely recommend it. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 08 AUGUST 2008 |
| | | | | | DON'T TOUCH THIS PRODUCT WITH LONG BARGE POLE - Scores 2/5
This is in theory a useful ipod add-on which is in reality a poor bit of kit. It picks up a signal okay for me so I've given it two stars however there were a series of major flaws which became clear while using it.
1) Power usage - power is expended at a frightening rate. I was able to get 4 hours from my fully charged ipod touch. I felt this was poor. 2) The gizmo would not allow me to turn off the auto back lighting and i found that every 2-3 minutes even when stationary the gizmo would light up my ipod like an xmas tree needlessly expending lots of power. There was no way of stopping this happening even by playing about with the ipod settings. 3) The gizmo wire which runs into the ipod is way too long leaving lots of loose wire rattling around in my pocket. I couldn't undertsand why it couldn't have the option of pluging the gizmo straight into the ipod.
Not a good product. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 28 JUNE 2008 |
| | | | | | ROBI - Scores 4/5
This Robi by roberts is possibly one of the best accessories for an ipod. About 5 months ago i bought the apple FM adapter and to be honest i thought it was naff. The sound quality was rubbish and it refused to pick up on a lot of FM signals which have very strong signal where i live. This Robi is in a completely different league. Apparently i should recieve no DAB radio stations but it has sniffed out Virgin and Planet Rock. Two v.good stations and more. Also the sound is very good. My only concern with this product is not really to do with it itself. If you have or think you have poor DAB radio reception then i would suggest you wait otherwie you could well be dissapointted, but otherwise its fine. On the train/bus and when walking. Also i was dubious about it working with my 5th generation ipod 80GB and it worked fine first time. I use ipod software version 1.3.1. If you're thinking about it, just go for it i say! | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 29 MAY 2008 |
